About the bridge
The J.C. Van Horne Bridge connects the respective provincial road systems and serves as a vital link between Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula and Northern New Brunswick.
This 804-metre (m) bridge includes 4 deck-truss approach-spans on each side. They are joined by a 419 m cantilever-through-truss-structure that rises 36.5 m above the roadway at the main piers and spans 248 m over the Restigouche River’s navigation channel.
The bridge has 2 traffic lanes with an average of 12,500 vehicles daily and includes 2 sidewalks.
The nearest alternative crossing is the Matapedia Interprovincial Bridge, 20 kilometres to the west.

Bridge work
We monitor the condition of the bridge through yearly inspections to ensure it continues to be in good condition, remains safe and serves future generations.
Lanes may be temporarily closed to motorists and other users to allow workers to safely conduct repair, maintenance and inspection work. We will work with partners and stakeholders to mitigate traffic delays.
Starting in August of 2025, we will repair the abutment and pier bearing areas, install erosion prevention measures at both embankments and replace the retaining wall along Salmon Boulevard. A contract for this work was awarded to BEMA Construction for almost $1.5 million. We expect to complete this work by December 2025. Occasional lane closures will occur during construction.

History of the bridge
- Early 1950s: There was only a ferry service for the communities near the Restigouche River between Campbellton and Pointe-à-la-Croix
- 1957: Vehicular traffic began to increase, and New Brunswick Member of Parliament Joseph Charles (J.C.) Van Horne made the case for a bridge
- 1958: Construction of the bridge started in June
- 1961: The bridge was completed in October
- 2001: The entire bridge deck was replaced
- 2020: The asphalt-wearing surface and bridge deck waterproofing were replaced
- 2022: Key structural parts of the bridge were strengthened
