Project description

Detailed inspections concluded that the bridge structure is in poor condition (Studies and reports: Replacing the Alexandra Bridge).

The boardwalk and articulation repair project mainly addresses the safety of the bridge by:

  • stabilizing the structure of the bridge
  • rehabilitating the boardwalk

The bridge was closed for vehicular traffic from October 2023 to February 2025.

The repair work performed on the bridge structure, including the truss members and the boardwalk lane, will allow the bridge to continue to be used safely until it’s replaced.

Key milestones

  • Winter 2022: A request for proposals was issued for construction management to deliver the project
  • Spring 2023: The construction management contract was awarded
  • Fall 2023: Work began and the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic
  • Fall 2024: The boardwalk was reopened to circulation
  • Winter 2025: Vehicular access was reinstated
  • Summer 2025: Repairs and stabilization work will be completed

Impact on traffic

Off-peak lane closures may be necessary to finalize remaining minor work and to perform inspections and maintenance work.

We’re working with our partners to ensure that plans are in place to minimize disruptions to commuting traffic during the project.

Lane reductions and closures on interprovincial bridges in the National Capital Region

Please note that the load restrictions on the Alexandra Bridge remain in effect with a maximum of:

  • 27 tonnes on the vehicular lanes
  • 5 tonnes on the boardwalk lane
