Interim auxiliary oiler replenishment vessel
This interim service contract provides at-sea supply and replenishment services to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during non-combat domestic and international operations. It could also offer added capabilities, such as:
- aviation support
- space for medical support
- humanitarian assistance or disaster relief
The former Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Protecteur and Preserver had to retire earlier than anticipated. This left the RCN with a gap in replenishment at-sea capability.
The motor vessel (MV) Asterix commercial vessel is now filling this gap until the joint support ships (JSS) are delivered under the National Shipbuilding Strategy.

Contract description
The MV Asterix is a commercial vessel, owned, operated and maintained by Federal Fleet Services. It is crewed by 2 civilian teams of 36 personnel.
Up to 114 military personnel can embark to perform activities and operations such as:
- replenishment at-sea
- military communications
- flight operations
- humanitarian assistance/disaster relief (HADR)
- force protection
- medical/dental services
The MV Asterix supports numerous RCN’s deployments and exercises at sea including but not limited to Operation SAVANNE, RIMPAC, Operation PROJECTION, Operation ARTEMIS, CUTLASS FURY and JOINT WARRIOR.
