Government of Canada moving forward with rejuvenation of West Memorial Building

Public Services and Procurement Canada is committed to revitalizing its heritage assets within its existing portfolio and to creating jobs that will help strengthen and grow the middle class.
Today, the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, announced a contract to Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. for design and architectural services for the West Memorial Building. The building, which is currently unused, will become an accessible and modern workplace that meets today’s health, safety and environmental standards. In the interim, this heritage asset will serve as temporary accommodation for all occupants of the Supreme Court of Canada Building during the future rehabilitation work on that building (planned to start in 2023).
Rehabilitating the West Memorial Building is an important project that will serve to preserve this memorial that honours Canadians who served our country during the Second World War.
A Request for Proposal to select a construction management firm will be launched in summer 2018.

The West Memorial Building was constructed between 1954 and 1958.

The $14.2-million contract (including applicable taxes) is the result of a competitive tendering process initiated last summer. The successful bidder is the joint venture of Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd.

The West Memorial Building, the East Memorial Building and the connecting Commemorative Memorial Archway form Canada’s primary Second World War memorial.

The objective is to make the West Memorial Building as green as possible while respecting its heritage character.

Once the temporary occupants have returned to the rehabilitated Supreme Court of Canada Building, the West Memorial Building will serve as long-term office space for future government tenants.
