Copyright media clearance program

Government departments and agencies are required to monitor the public environment to help identify and track issues.

To respect copyright laws and regulations, Public Services and Procurement Canada manages a common service on behalf of the government. This service is provided to 79 institutions, including the Senate, the House of Commons and parliamentary committees. The service provides access to a selection of news sources that include national and regional media coverage in English and French, online news, magazines, newspapers, newswires, and television transcripts.

PSPC provides other services that include:

  • supporting federal organizations in meeting the Policy on Communications and Federal Identity
  • negotiating government-wide licences for approximately 70 media sources to access over 7,000 news articles daily on behalf of its clients
  • helping improve and innovate media monitoring practices across the Government of Canada
  • analyzing media content

The program's expenditures are approximately $8 million per year.
