Medically released veterans

Find out if you have a priority entitlement

• You may be eligible for a priority entitlement if you have been medically released from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) [under item 3(a) or 3(b)] - to find out contact the Director, Casualty Support Management, Department of National Defence, at 1-800-883-6094.
• If you have a priority entitlement, and are found to meet the essential qualifications of a job, you must be hired ahead of other qualified persons to federal public service jobs.

Jobs open to the public

• Whether or not you have a priority entitlement, if you are an honourably released veteran, with at least three years of service, you also have a preference for appointment.
• Priority entitlement is always applied before preference for appointment.
• Preference means that you must be hired ahead of other Canadians and permanent residents if you have applied and are found qualified for a job open to the public.
• Your preference is in effect for up to five years after you are honourably released, unless you are already employed permanently in the public service.

Jobs open to federal public servants

• Whether or not you have a priority entitlement, if you are a CAF member with at least three years of service or an honourably released veteran with at least three years of service you have mobility. This means you can apply to jobs open to federal public service employees.
• You can apply to internal jobs regardless of what is in the "Who can apply" section of the job advertisement, but you must meet employment equity criteria (Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities or women) if it's included in that section.
• Your mobility is in effect while you are an active CAF member with at least three years of service or for up to five years after you are honourably released, unless you are already permanently employed in the public service.
• Note: If you have a priority entitlement it will always be applied first.
• You can request an informal discussion from the hiring organization to better understand the process and assessment results. When recourse applies, the notifications provide information you may need to submit a complaint.
