About the Pan-Canadian Zoonoses Report
The Pan-Canadian Zoonoses Report, 2013 to 2022, provides a 10-year overview of selected zoonotic diseases affecting people in Canada. It highlights key trends and identifies emerging and evolving risks. The report also includes relevant information on animal populations and considers the growing influence of climate change, providing a more comprehensive One Health perspective of zoonotic disease risks in Canada.
Designed for public health professionals, researchers, decision-makers, and other One Health partners, the report supports a better understanding of zoonotic disease risks in Canada and helps inform public health action.
About zoonoses
Zoonoses are infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animals to people. They can spread through direct contact with animals, indirectly through the environment, via contaminated food or water, or through bites from vectors such as ticks and mosquitoes. Examples of zoonotic diseases include rabies, hantavirus, avian influenza, Lyme disease and West Nile virus.
In Canada, zoonotic disease risks are shaped by our geography, climate, animal populations, public health infrastructure, and agricultural systems. While many zoonoses remain relatively uncommon in Canada, some risks are evolving. For example, climate change is contributing to the expansion of the range of ticks and mosquitoes, which is associated with increasing trends in some vector-borne diseases. This changing landscape highlights the importance of ongoing surveillance, cross-sector collaboration, and a One Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health together to better understand and respond to these complex risks.

Developing the report
The Public Health Agency of Canada developed this report with input from federal, provincial, territorial, and non-government partners. It draws on national disease surveillance systems, partner data, and targeted research to provide an overview of zoonotic disease trends and One Health considerations in Canada.
As with other surveillance reports, this report has limitations. Some diseases may be underreported, and reporting may vary across provinces and territories and over time. More information is available in the methods section of the full report.
