Invasive Pneumococcal Disease
Surveillance of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD)
Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) is a notifiable disease in all provinces and territories, with cases reported to provincial/territorial departments of health. As a nationally notifiable disease, IPD cases that meet the national case definition are reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada through national surveillance systems:
- Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (CNDSS): Contains basic epidemiologic data since 2000. Data is available online.
- IMPACT (Immunization Monitoring Program, ACTive): A paediatric hospital-based active surveillance network that identifies and reports cases to the Agency.
- National Enhanced Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance System (eIPD) pilot: An enhanced case-based surveillance system, launched in 2011, that is currently being piloted jointly by the Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Infectious Diseases (CIRID) and the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML).
- Streptococcal Disease Surveillance: National laboratory surveillance of IPD serotypes and antimicrobial resistance in Canada is currently accomplished through a voluntary, passive system where isolates are submitted to the NML for diagnostic reference services.
In addition, non-nominal epidemiologic and laboratory linked data is collected through the International Circumpolar Surveillance (ICS) of invasive bacterial diseases. Since 2000, the system collects real-time data from participating northern regions in Canada
