Learn about the symptoms of shigellosis and what to do if you become ill.

Symptoms of shigellosis

Shigellosis has a wide range of symptoms. You may not get sick at all. But if you do, symptoms usually start within 1 to 3 days after exposure.

You may experience:

  • fever
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • abdominal pains
  • stomach cramps
  • diarrhea (watery and often bloody)

Most symptoms end within 5 to 7 days. Most people recover fully, though it may take several weeks to months before bowel habits return to normal.

What to do if you become ill

If you think you have shigellosis, see your health care provider.

Avoid preparing food for other people if you think you are:

  • sick with shigellosis
  • suffering from any other contagious illness causing diarrhea

Severe vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration (loss of fluids). To protect against dehydration, drink plenty of fluids.
