HIV in Canada: 2024 surveillance highlights

On this page

Overview

  • 2,288 new HIV diagnoses in 2024 (3.3% decrease since 2023).
  • National rate of new HIV diagnoses for 2024 – 5.5 per 100,000 population.
  • For 2023 the national rate was 5.9 per 100,000 population, and there were 2,367 new HIV diagnoses.
  • The data included on this page is the best available data as of February 19, 2026. This page will be updated once more data becomes available.

Data notes

  • Data for 2024 excludes cases that have been previously diagnosed outside of Canada (e.g., prior to immigration) or in another province or territory, when known.
  • Data presented do not account for age and sex rate variations between provinces and territories.
  • Note that for Manitoba cases, information collected in 2024 about heterosexual sex as a route of exposure or transmission is not reportable in a compatible format. As such, these cases were assigned to other exposure categories; however, heterosexual sex is an important factor in HIV transmission in Manitoba.
  • If discrepancies exist between data summarized and provincial or territorial reports, the most recent provincial or territorial report should be utilized.
  • TR: territories, AT: Atlantic provinces.
