What are the risks of being infected with hepatitis E?

Hepatitis E is not common in Canada.

In developing countries with poor sanitation and hygiene, hepatitis E can be widespread. It is usually spread through water contaminated with sewage. This can lead to large outbreaks.

In more developed countries, hepatitis E rarely spreads. If it does spread, it often does so through contaminated food.

In pregnant women, hepatitis E infection is more serious, particularly during the third trimester. It can result in miscarriage, or death of the newborn child or mother.
