Symptoms of campylobacteriosis

Campylobacteriosis has a wide range of symptoms. It is possible to consume contaminated food or water and not get sick at all.

But if you do get sick, symptoms usually start within 2 to 5 days after exposure. Symptoms may also appear as soon as a day or up to a month after exposure.

You may experience:

  • fever
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • diarrhea (with blood or mucous)

Most people recover within 2 to 5 days, but sometimes illness may last up to 10 days.

While most people recover completely on their own, some people may have a more serious illness that:

If you think you have campylobacteriosis, see your health care provider.

Avoid preparing food for other people if you think you are:

  • sick with campylobacteriosis
  • suffering from any other illness of the stomach or intestines

Severe vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration (loss of fluids). To protect against dehydration, drink plenty of water or fluids. This is particularly important for at-risk groups.
