Description of Program

The Canadian Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance System (CJDSS) is operated by the Public Health Agency of Canada and conducts prospective national surveillance for all types of human prion disease in Canada. The main purposes of the CJDSS are to better understand the epidemiology of human prion diseases, to improve the options available for their rapid and accurate diagnosis, and ultimately to protect the health of Canadians by reducing risks of prion disease transmission.

Why was a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) completed?

A PIA was conducted due to the sensitivity of personal information that is collected by the CJDSS.

The PIA examines the privacy-related risks of the CJDSS and proposes methods to lower these risks.

The PIA focused on analyzing and identifying privacy risk for the CJDSS’ collection, use, disclosure, retention and disposition of personal information.

The PIA identified privacy risks pertaining to the CJDSS Personal Information Bank, information sharing and security of information. Privacy Management Division and the CJDSS have implemented measures to address the identified risks.
