Aimee Yurris

Aimee Yurris is from Yellowknife, NT. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science at the University of Waterloo School of Public Health Sciences. Her thesis research focuses on the role of community freezers for food security in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Using a community-based research and evaluation approach, this qualitative research project seeks to develop an improved understanding of how community freezers play out in the everyday context of Inuvialuit communities’ food systems, including the role that community freezers play in supporting access to country foods, food sharing practices, and safe food storage. Aimee earned her undergraduate degree in Indigenous Health from the University of Lethbridge, as well as a diploma in Culinary Arts from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Aimee is a proud volunteer with the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre Youth/Elder Eagle Program. As a recipient of the 2023 Sprout Ideas Fellowship, she led the creation of the “Kitchen Talks! Fall 2023 Community Cookbook” project in partnership with several youth-serving organizations in Yellowknife.
