Three ways that Hatch Life has increased biotechnology research capacity and mentorship at UBC

The University of British Columbia has a long history of transforming research into impactful treatments, products and services that contribute to the social and economic fabric of Canada.
In 2019, we contributed $1.56M in funding to the School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at UBC to establish Hatch Life, a biotechnology incubator space providing early stage life sciences ventures with access to increased research capacity and mentorship.
We connected with Dr. Peter Zandstra, Director, SMBE, who shared the recent impact:
- The 1,500 sq ft wet lab space is now equipped with critical cell and tissue culture infrastructure, 3D & bioprinters, imagers and molecular biology equipment.
- Since mid-2020, three UBC ventures working on drug-discovery and cell-based therapy development have been incubated in the hub.
- New partnerships with prominent entities, including VC firms, entrepreneurship programs, and the private sector, will enable five times the venture-hosting capacity by 2025.
