B.C. cleantech innovators tackle environmental issues and create a cleaner future

In 2020, we spoke with some of British Columbia’s most promising cleantech innovators to learn more about their vision for a cleaner, greener future. Since receiving funding from PacifiCan a few years ago, they have made incredible progress in that pursuit.

HTEC

In 2017, we announced $600,000 in funding to help HTEC build and deploy Canada’s first retail hydrogen fueling station in B.C. In June 2018, HTEC opened that station in Vancouver, and it laid the foundation for British Columbia’s network of hydrogen fueling stations.

Here’s a look at its progress since then:

• HTEC now has 17 stations at various stages of operations, development and planning in B.C., Alberta, Quebec, and California, with several more in the works.
• 2,516 fills and 7,274 kg of hydrogen were dispensed at the first hydrogen fueling station within the last two years (Feb 2019 to Feb 2022).
• HTEC’s network of hydrogen stations is able to provide fuel to over 2,000 zero emission hydrogen electric vehicles by the end of 2022.
• Eight engineers were hired during the initial phase of this project  (September 2016, to December 2019). The first station served as a springboard, and HTEC is now a robust 75-member team.

Colin Armstrong, President and CEO of HTEC, shared that “The WINN funding allowed HTEC to complete Canada’s first retail hydrogen station forging the path to subsequent station openings in BC and Quebec. This helped HTEC solidify its Canadian leadership and positioned the company to win US-based as well as other international business opportunities.”

Quadrogen Power Systems, Inc.

Quadrogen’s Integrated Biogas Upgrading System (IBUS) in Delta, B.C.

Quadrogen takes harmful gas from landfills and turns it into renewable power, products and energies. The company has been operating its Integrated Biogas Upgrading System (IBUS) in Delta, B.C. since October 2020 with $1,100,000 in funding from PacifiCan.

IBUS is currently in operation 24/7, decarbonizing our future by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing more than 160 gigajoules of renewable natural gas daily. 

Last year, Quadrogen was ranked third among Business in Vancouver’s list of Top 100 fastest-growing companies in B.C., reporting an astounding 5,416% 5-year growth rate.

PacifiCan provides financial support to businesses and not-for-profit organizations for projects that advance economic growth and diversity in British Columbia.
