Recommendations made to government

An important part of the OFOVC's work is identifying issues that impact victims of crime and recommending ways that the federal government can make its laws, policies and processes more responsive to victims.

The Ombudsperson makes recommendations in a variety of ways, including writing to a minister, as part of an annual report or a special report, and during meetings with responsible authorities.

Additionally, the Ombudsperson is frequently invited to appear as a witness before both Senate Committees and House Parliamentary Committees. Committees will examine proposals for new legislation and study issues referred to them by the House or Senate.

When appearing before committees, the Ombudsperson will share remarks identifying issues that impact victims of crime and may make recommendations on ways the federal government can make its laws, policies and processes more responsive to victims.
