Ombudsman’s statement on the 20th anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2021- Today marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that changed the world. As we mark this somber anniversary, we remember and honour the 2,977 innocent victims, including 24 Canadians: those who died at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the passengers of Flight 93, the first responders who died saving the lives of others on 9/11, and those who have died due to the illnesses they developed from that day. We offer our thoughts to those grieving the loss of their loved ones, and acknowledge how their lives were forever changed. We also pay tribute to the courage, perseverance, and sacrifice of the selfless first responders.

At the Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime, we know that the long-term impacts of terrorism on its victims and survivors are serious, and that victims need long-term care and social, psychological, financial, and informational support following an incident of this magnitude. Additionally, Canadians face unique challenges to access support, compensation, and justice when a tragedy occurs in another country.

We must respond to the needs and concerns of Canadians impacted by violence in Canada or in another country, and ensure that victims and their loved ones are provided victim-centred, trauma-informed responses in order to facilitate their healing and recovery.
