What we do
Appeals Officers in occupational health and safety, designated by the Minister of Labour and grouped under an administrative structure known as the Occupational Health and Safety Tribunal Canada (Tribunal), exercise the functions of an administrative tribunal. To offer the best services to Canadians, the Tribunal is located in the National Capital Region.
The mandate of the Appeals Officer is to receive, hear and dispose of appeals of decisions issued by health and safety officers under [ss.129(7)] and directions under [s.146] of the Canada Labour Code, Part II. The Appeals Officer shall provide a decision with reasons. The Appeals Officer can intervene in all sectors under federal jurisdiction, such as the Air, Rail, Marine and Oil and Gas sectors, the federal Public Service and businesses like road transportation, ferries, and grain elevators.

Our Mandate
The mandate of the Appeals Officers regrouped under the Occupational Health and Safety Tribunal Canada is to receive, hear and decide on appeals of decisions of absence of danger and directions regarding occupational health and safety issued pursuant to the Canada Labour Code.
Our Vision
The Appeals Officers regrouped under the Occupational Health and Safety Tribunal Canada seek in the context of their mandate and the prevention of work place accidents and injuries:
- an understanding by all parties of hearing procedures and of their rights;
- holding prompt, impartial and fair hearings;
- issuing correct and reasonable decisions, with reasons, in a timely manner;
- establishing jurisprudence in the interpretation and the application of the Code and its regulations.
In the exercise of its powers, the Tribunal aims to be efficient, effective, innovative and progressive. The working environment at the Tribunal promotes learning, development, professionalism and respect.
