HMCS Stettler
There has been only one vessel named HMCS Stettler in the Royal Canadian Navy.
HMCS Stettler (K681 / 311) / River-class frigate / Prestonian-class ocean escort
Alternatively named for Edmonton, Alberta, because there was already a ship named Edmunston in the Royal Canadian Navy, HMCS Stettler was commissioned 7 May 1944 at Montreal, Quebec, and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 28 May. She carried out work-ups in Bermuda in July. On her return to Halifax, she was assigned to Escort Group 16 and on 7 March 1945 left for the group’s new base in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Thereafter, she was employed in British waters, except for two round trips to Gibraltar in May and June of 1945.
HMCS Stettler left Londonderry for home on 16 June, the last Canadian warship to do so, and began refit at Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Work was suspended in August and the ship was paid off 9 November 1945. Though sold, she was later recovered and converted to a Prestonian-class ocean escort, being re-commissioned on 27 February 1954. HMCS Stettler subsequently moved to the west coast, and was finally paid off there on 31 August 1966. She was broken up in 1967 at Victoria, British Columbia.
