HMCS Sherbrooke

There has been only one vessel named HMCS Sherbrooke in the Royal Canadian Navy.

HMCS Sherbrooke (K152)

Commissioned at Sorel, Quebec, on 5 June 1941, the Flower Class corvette HMCS Sherbrooke arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, seven days later. She joined Halifax Force later that month, but transferred to Newfoundland Command in September and left Sydney, Nova Scotia, on the 29th to escort convoy SC.47 as far as Iceland. After two round trips to Iceland, she left St. John’s, Newfoundland, on 14 January 1942 to join SC.64, the first Newfoundland-Londonderry convoy, and was thereafter employed as an ocean escort on that run, principally with Escort Group C-4.

HMCS Sherbrooke took part in two particularly hard-fought convoy battles: ON.127 (August 1942) and HX.229 (March 1943). Her westbound journey after the latter convoy was her last. After a major refit at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, from April to June 1943 and work-ups at Pictou, Nova Scotia, she joined Escort Group W-2 of Western Local Escort Force. In April 1944 she transferred to W-7 and in October to W-1.

During this time, she underwent a refit at Liverpool, Nova Scotia that included the extension of her forecastle. This was followed by a month’s repairs at Halifax and three weeks’ work-ups in Bermuda in October.

HMCS Sherbrooke was paid off at Sorel on 28 June 1945, and broken up at Hamilton, Ontario in 1947.
