HMCS Parry Sound
There has been only one vessel named HMCS Parry Sound in the Royal Canadian Navy.
HMCS Parry Sound (K341)
Commissioned at Midland, Ontario on 30 August 1944, the Flower Class corvette HMCS Parry Sound arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, late in September and left in October for work ups in Bermuda.
From Bermuda, she sailed directly to St. John’s, Newfoundland, and arrived there on 11 November. Assigned to Escort Group C-7, which was in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, at the time, she sailed on 17 November to join up with it accompanied by several American-built Russian sub-chasers. Her first convoy was ONS.39, which she picked up at the end of the year.
HMCS Parry Sound left St. John’s on 17 January 1945 with convoy HX.332, but developed defects and had to turn back. It was mid-March before repairs were completed, and she returned to convoy duty on 17 April. She departed Londonderry for the last time in June and was paid off at Sydney, Nova Scotia, on 10 July.
Sold for conversion as a whaler, she entered service in 1950 as the Honduran Olympic Champion. In 1956, she was sold to Japanese owners and renamed Otori Maru No. 15. Renamed again as Kyo Maru No. 22 in 1961, she is last noted in Lloyd’s Register for 1978-1979.
