HMCS Galt

There has been only 1 vessel named Galt in the Royal Canadian Navy.

HMCS Galt (K163)

Commissioned on May 15, 1941, at Montréal, Quebec, the Flower Class corvette HMCS Galt arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, June 6. She was assigned in July to Newfoundland Escort Force and left St. John’s, Newfoundland, for Iceland on August 25 with SC.41, her first convoy. She was to serve on that route until January 1942.

In February 1942, she commenced a refit at Liverpool, Nova Scotia, which was completed on May 11, and after working up in June, was assigned to Escort Group C-3. She arrived at Londonderry, Northern Ireland, for the first time on June 5 from convoy HX.191, and served on the Newfoundland–Londonderry run for the balance of the year.

She arrived January 4, 1943, at Liverpool for another refit, which was completed at Halifax in mid-April, worked up in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia, and in June joined Escort Group C-1. She left Halifax March 13, 1944, for New York for yet another refit, this one including forecastle extension, completing early in May, and a month later left Halifax for Bermuda to work up. On her return, HMCS Galt was allocated for the balance of the war to Escort Group W-5, Western Escort Force.

HMCS Galt was paid off June 21, 1945 at Sorel, Quebec, and broken up at Hamilton, Ontario, in 1946.
