HMCS Galiano

There has been only one vessel named Galiano in the Royal Canadian Navy.

HMCS Galiano / Fisheries Protection Cruiser

HMCS Galiano

Galiano was built in Dublin, Ireland, in 1913. She and her sister Malaspina were originally fisheries patrol craft for the Canadian government. Although Galiano apparently was not formally commissioned until 15 December 1917, she alternated civil duties with those of a naval patrol and examination vessel throughout the war.

In need of repairs, she foundered in heavy seas and was lost with all hands in Barkley Sound, BC, on 30 October 1918, the RCN’s only warship loss in the First World War. The Naval Memorial in Ross Bay Cemetery, Vancouver Island, BC bears the names of the 36 officers and men lost with the Galiano.
