In the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), we believe in a work environment free from intimidation, humiliation, discrimination, harassment and abuse of any sorts. As a professional military service and employer of choice, the RCN is moving forward together to root out unacceptable behaviours within our ranks, inequalities in our customs and traditions, and unequivocally take action when necessary.
We must be the best we can be; the best Canada has to offer. Together we are learning, we are acting, and we will be better. Respect for everyone is our abiding objective, while maintaining a potent warrior professionalism.
Code of conduct
The RCN encourages and promotes a respectful and professional working environment free of intimidation, humiliation, discrimination, abuse and harassment. The RCN Code of Conduct was created to help guide personnel in their daily duties and activities.
Internal review of personal conduct
The Internal Review of Personal Conduct within the RCN was undertaken in 2014 by the Internal Review Team (IRT). The IRT found the RCN was well supported by Canadian Armed Forces policies but identified areas for improvement.
Naval Order – Hateful conduct
The RCN does not tolerate hateful or racist conduct in any form. Hateful and racist conduct is contrary to Canadian military ethos. The RCN’s intent, in line with our fellow services, is to drive racism, discrimination and Hateful Conduct from our ranks and ensure that everyone on our team, civilian and military, has the opportunity to reach their full potential in a diverse, inclusive, and respectful environment.
