Rear-Admiral Jeff Murray joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a Direct Entry Officer in 1999 following his graduation from Carleton University in 1996. His tactical experience has included service in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Fleets where he sailed in Iroquois, Halifax, and Protecteur class ships.

Rear-Admiral Murray’s Command positions at sea have included appointments as the Executive Officer aboard HMCS Protecteur from 2012-2014, and as the Commanding Officer of HMCS Fredericton from 2014-2015.

Gaining experience in the institution, Rear-Admiral Murray has completed a variety postings in both Naval and Joint Commands. His postings have included Staff Officer assignments in the Headquarters of both Maritime Forces Atlantic and the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, as the Tactics Officer at the Canadian Forces Naval Operations School, Chief of Staff – Operations to the Commander Canadian Fleet Atlantic, Executive Assistant to the Chief of the Defence Staff, Director Structure Integration within the Chief of Force Development, and Director General Naval Strategic Readiness. He assumed his appointment as Director General Plans in June 2024.

Rear-Admiral Murray is a graduate of Joint Command and Staff Programme 37, National Security Programme 12, and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with a major/minor in Law and English from Carleton University. 

In the late spring of 2026, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, and appointed Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy.
