Compensation and Benefits Instructions for the Canadian Forces (CBI) 205.536 - Allowance – Loss of Operational Allowances

Topic

Compensation and Benefits Instructions for the Canadian Forces (CBI) 205.536 - Allowance – Loss of Operational Allowances

Case number

Description

Allowance – Loss of Operational Allowances (ALOA) was designed to assist those members who are put in harm's way on special duty service and, because of that service, suffer an illness or injury. However, the current provisions of the CBI 205.536 make a distinction regarding the status of the member at the time of injury, as opposed to focusing on the cause of the injury. Specifically, members who are injured while conducting physical activity or playing sports are not entitled to ALOA, even if the physical activity or sport are not the cause of the injury.

Recommendation

The Committee recommended that the Canadian Armed Forces seek that the wording of CBI 205.536 be revised to ensure that the application of the policy and entitlement to ALOA are not unfairly restrictive.
