Access to Information and Privacy

The Access to Information Act came into effect on July 1, 1983. It provides Canadian citizens, permanent residents and any person and corporation present in Canada a right of access to information contained in government records, subject to certain specific and limited exceptions.

The Privacy Act came into effect on July 1, 1983. It imposes obligations on federal government departments and agencies to respect the privacy rights of individuals by limiting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. The Privacy Act also gives individuals the right of access to their personal information and the right to request the correction of that information.
