The Friends of Library and Archives Canada

The Friends of Library and Archives Canada association was founded in May 2003, following the merger of two organizations:

  • the Friends of the National Archives of Canada
  • the Friends of the National Library of Canada

This association was created in anticipation of the merger of the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada to form Library and Archives Canada (LAC), which was made official in 2004 through the Library and Archives of Canada Act.

Role of the Friends of LAC

Promoting donations and raising funds for special acquisitions are central to the mission of the Friends of LAC.

The association also supports LAC by:

  • raising public awareness of LAC’s role in preserving Canada’s documentary heritage
  • offering individuals and organizations opportunities to participate in LAC programs and activities
  • enriching LAC’s collections through donations of Canadian published and archival materials
  • generating revenue by raising funds and organizing fundraising activities in support of various LAC projects, including special acquisitions

Acquisition process

The acquisitions made by the Friends of LAC aim to enrich the collections and preserve documents of cultural or historical value. These include rare items related to Canadian history and culture, as well as objects produced in Canada.

Each year, members assess potential acquisitions and determine which ones will be donated to LAC. Working in collaboration with librarians and archivists, they identify items available on the market or at auction—rare books, maps, noteworthy documents, and more.

The Cubby

The Cubby is a used bookstore located at 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario and operated by the Friends of LAC. It offers a wide selection of second-hand books, and the proceeds help fund the acquisition of Canadian documents for LAC.

All donated books are carefully reviewed, which has led to hundreds of titles being added to LAC’s collection of Canadian publications.
