Funding for impact assessment research in Canada

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada’s (IAAC) Research Program funds innovative research to support an efficient and effective federal impact assessment system in Canada.

Who can apply

Funding is open to:

• Research and academic institutions
• Not-for-profit organizations
• Indigenous communities and organizations
• Individuals

What types of research are funded

Eligible proposals may focus on:

• Project-level, regional or strategic assessment
• Environmental, economic, social, health, and/or gender-based impacts
• Impacts on Indigenous Peoples and their rights
• Cumulative and regional effects
• Use of science and Indigenous Knowledge

Deliverables and activities may include:

• Development of tools, frameworks, methodologies, case studies, and best practices
• Building research networks and sharing results and best practices within the Canadian impact assessment community
• Other relevant activities approved by IAAC

How to apply

1. Complete the Application Form
   1. Make sure you have all supporting documents available
2. Submit by email to the Research Program: research-recherche@iaac-aeic.gc.ca

It is suggested that you apply early in the calendar year to maximize funding availability.

Funding amounts

• Most initiatives are funded up to a maximum of $75,000 per project
• Final amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis

After you apply

• IAAC aims to provide funding decisions within two months of a proposal being received
• If funds are unavailable in a given fiscal year, your proposal may be carried forward for future consideration

Grant agreement

Successful applicants sign a grant agreement that:

• specifies the eligible costs and activities to be undertaken
• sets conditions for payment
• requires accountability for public funds received

Grants are paid out as soon as the grant agreement is accepted. Expense claims are not required.

IAAC reserves the right to undertake, or have undertaken, a financial audit of the accounts and resources of the recipient to ensure compliance with the provisions of the agreement.

Knowledge-sharing requirement

To support the dissemination of research findings, recipients may be asked to provide:

• A plain language research summary
• An infographic of research findings
• A presentation to IAAC staff
