After you apply

If you applied for an open work permit only

You can keep working under the same conditions as your original work permit while you wait for a decision on your open work permit application. This is called maintained status.

If we approve your open work permit application, we’ll mail the work permit to the Canadian address you gave us.

If you applied for an open work permit and for restoration

You can stay in Canada while we make a decision on your application but you can’t work until your new work permit has been issued.
