You need a work permit

If you’re a self-employed fishing guide working on a Canadian lake, you need a work permit.

You may be both

• eligible for an employer-specific work permit
• exempt from needing a Labour Market Impact Assessment

To be eligible for the exemption, you must be able to show that your work will either

• attract tourism
• benefit Canadian citizens or permanent residents

Before you apply

As a self-employed worker, you must

• submit your own offer of employment to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
  • In the Employer Portal, use the exemption code “C-11-self-employed”
• pay a $230 employer compliance fee
• get an offer of employment number

When you fill out the application form

• Use your name as the employer name in the work permit application.
• Select “Exemption from Labour Market Impact Assessment” as the type of work permit in the “Details of intended work in Canada” section.
