You're conducting research at certain Canadian institutions
Based on your answer, you may be eligible for an employer-specific work permit(opens in a new tab) if you’ll be
- working temporarily for the International Development Research Centre of Canada
- sponsored by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. as a distinguished scientist or post-doctoral fellow
- sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada or the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada as a distinguished scientist or scholar coming to participate in research for these organizations, or
- hold a research chair position at a Canadian university
Research chairs must be nominated for their research excellence, and their position must be partially or wholly funded by federal or provincial governments.
Before you submit your work permit application, your employer must
- submit an offer of employment to IRCC, and
- provide you with an offer of employment number
Note: When you complete your work permit application, select “Exemption from Labour Market Impact Assessment” as the type of work permit in the “Details of Intended Work in Canada” section.

If your job is classified under Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) category 0 or 1 of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system, you’re eligible for 2-week application processing.
