You need a work permit - A permanent residence applicant on humanitarian and compassionate grounds needs a work permit

If you’ve applied for permanent residence, you need a work permit to work in Canada.

You may be eligible for an open work permit(opens in a new tab)  if you’ve applied or been included on an application for permanent residence on humanitarian and compassionate grounds and the application has been approved in principle.

You also need to meet the general eligibility requirements(opens in a new tab)  for a work permit.

Type of work permit

When you complete your work permit application, select “Open Work Permit” as the type of work permit in the “Details of intended work in Canada” section. Leave the employer section of the application blank when you apply for your open work permit.
