How to apply

Apply for your transit visa before coming to Canada. Apply online, unless you

• have a disability that prevents you from applying online
• hold an identity or travel document for non-national residents, refugees or stateless persons

In these cases, you can apply on paper.

1. Information you’ll need during the application process

   You’ll need to enter the following information when applying online:

   Personal details

   This includes personal information like your full name, your date and place of birth, your marital status and your residence history.

   Travel documents details

   This includes information from your valid passport or travel document, as well as your national identity document and US PR card, if applicable. You should also provide proof that you hold a valid visa for your intended country of destination, if required.

   Finances

   It’s recommended that you provide proof that you have sufficient funds to support your trip to your destination country. If someone is supporting you financially for your trip, you should provide proof that this person has sufficient funds.

   Education history

   Tell us if you have any post-secondary education, including university, college or apprenticeship training.

   Criminality, security and medical background

   You will be asked to provide information about your criminal and medical history.

   Family information

   If you’re travelling with other members of your family, you must provide their information.

2. Get into the IRCC Portal

   You can apply online using the IRCC Portal.

   If it’s your first time using the IRCC Portal, you need to get an invite code to create an account. Once you have your code, you can create your account in the portal and sign in.

   Make sure to keep this page open for instructions on how to apply.

3. Start the application process

   Follow the steps below to start your transit visa application once you’ve signed into the IRCC Portal:

   1. Read and accept the terms and conditions.
   2. Click on “Apply for a visitor visa or transit visa.”
   3. Check the box after reading the information displayed, and click on “Start application.”
   4. Answer the questions in the online form.
   5. You should reach a page indicating that you’re applying for a transit visa. If you see something different, check your answers again.
   6. Click on “Continue your application.”
   7. Answer the questions in the online form. Once you reach the “Summary of your information” page, review the information entered to make sure it’s accurate and click on “Save and continue.”

4. Documents you’ll need to support your application

   At this stage, you’ll need to add supporting and optional documents to your online application.

   Mandatory supporting documents

   • travel itinerary
   • national identity document
   • passport or travel document
   Optional documents

   • consent personal information form (IMM 0707)
   • employer letter
   • valid visa of your final destination
   • proof of financial support
   • additional documents

5. Complete your application

   At this stage, you’ll need to fill and sign the Consent and declaration page.

   You’ll then be taken to the Pay your fees page. There are no fees associated with the transit visa, so you can simply click on “Save and Continue.”

   You should then reach a page confirming that your application has been submitted.
