International students travelling outside Canada and then re-entering
If you have a valid study permit
You may be able to re-enter Canada as an international student if you have any of the following:
- a valid study permit
- approval for a study permit or study permit extension
You must also meet all the following criteria:
- You have a valid passport or travel document.
- You’re attending a designated learning institution (DLI).
- You have either a valid visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA), depending on which document you need.
- You meet all the other requirements for entering Canada.
Ebola disease: Temporary measures extended until September 28, 2026
The temporary measures put in place in response to Ebola have been extended until September 28, 2026.
If your visitor visa or eTA has expired
You may be allowed to re-enter Canada if you
- have only been to the United States or St-Pierre and Miquelon and
- return to Canada by the end of your authorized period of stay
You must show the border services officer that you meet all the requirements listed above before we’ll let you re-enter.
If your study permit extension hasn’t been approved yet
You won’t be able to study until we approve your study permit extension.
If you applied to extend your study permit before it expired, you may be allowed to enter Canada if you meet all other requirements.
