Who can renew online

The requirements to apply online are different from the ones for applying in person or by mail.

Make sure you meet all these requirements before creating an account:

• You applied for your current passport when you were 16 or older.
• Your current passport
  • is a regular (blue) passport
  • was valid for 5 or 10 years
  • shows your place of birth
  • was issued in the last 15 years
• You’re applying to renew your own passport.
• Your home and mailing address are in Canada, and you’ll be there to receive your passport.
• Your passport will expire in the next 6 months or is expired right now.
  • If your passport expires in more than 6 months, you can’t renew online.
• You’re not travelling in the next 20 business days.
  • If you’re travelling in the next 20 business days, don’t apply online. Delivery can add an extra 5 business days to the 20 days it can take to process your application. Apply in person instead.
  • Your current passport will be cancelled and will not be valid after you apply for your renewal.
• You’ll use the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier on your new passport as on your current passport.
• Your current passport isn’t
  • damaged
  • seized, or
  • surrendered
• You’re not reporting a lost or stolen passport as found if it hasn’t already been returned to us.
  • If you found your passport after it was lost or stolen, you need to return it to us. You’re not eligible to renew online.

• You don’t have any observations in your current passport.

  What’s an observation?

  Observations are notes some people have on a separate page of their passport to explain special circumstances (like a name that was too long to be printed in full or if you have a diplomatic passport). Most people don’t have observations in their passport.

If you meet all of these criteria, you can renew online.

You need a digital photo to renew online

Your digital passport photo must:

• be taken in person by a commercial photographer
• be no more than 6 months old when you apply
• not be a scanned copy of a printed photo

It’s a good idea to get both a digital and a printed photo. This will give you the flexibility to apply online, by mail or in person.
