How to get a police certificate – Denmark (including Faroe Islands and Greenland)
If you need to give your fingerprints for a police certificate, this isn’t the same as giving your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) for an application.

Certificate of Criminal Record (Attest for straffeattest)
Police certificate and IRCC requirements
You must provide a police certificate when you apply for:
- permanent residence
- citizenship
- some temporary residence programs
Check your application package or instructions for details.
How to apply
If you have no criminal record in Denmark, the certificate will be issued in English, German, French and Spanish.
If you do have previous convictions or entries, the certificate of criminal record will be issued in Danish. You are responsible for having it translated to English or French.
To issue the certificate, Danish authorities need
- written and signed consent
- a photocopy of your valid passport
- a postal address to send the certificate to

The handling time is approximately 3 working days, plus the time it takes for the letter to reach its destination via regular postal service. Due to Danish law, your certificate of criminal record cannot be sent to you by email.
The issuance of a certificate of criminal record is free of charge.
If you have a NemID, you can request a certificate of criminal record online (note that the form is in Danish).
Personal criminal record checks (Privat straffeattest) are not accepted for IRCC purposes.
