How to get a police certificate – Bosnia and Herzegovina
If you need to give your fingerprints for a police certificate, this isn’t the same as giving your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) for an application.
Name of the document you need
Certificate (Uvjerenje) issued by the police.
If you’ve lived inside of Bosnia-Herzegovina within the past 6 months, you’ll also need a Certificate of Criminal Process, issued by the court (also called an Uvjerenje).
Police certificate and IRCC requirements
You must provide a police certificate when you apply for permanent residence in Canada, and for some temporary residence programs (please see the document checklist and/or visa office requirements for details).
How to apply
If you’re a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina
If you live in Bosnia and Herzegovina
For the police-issued certificate
If you live in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Apply at your local Cantonal Police Office of the Ministry of the Interior (MUP)
If you live in the Republika Srpska
- Apply at your local district police department of the Ministry of the Interior (SUP)
For the court-issued certificate
- Apply at your local municipal court (Opstinski Sud)
- Some municipal courts may accept an authorized representative acting on your behalf.
If you live outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina
For the police-issued certificate
- Apply at the district police office where you were born
- If you can’t apply in person, you’ll need a notarized power-of-attorney to let a friend or family member to apply for you.
For the court-issued certificate
- Apply at the local municipal court where you were born (Opstinski Sud)
- Some municipal courts may accept an authorized representative acting on your behalf.
- If you’ve lived outside of Bosnia for the past 6 months, you don’t need a court certificate.
If you’re not a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina
If you live in Bosnia and Herzegovia
For the police-issued certificate
If you live in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

- If you can’t apply in person, you’ll need a notarized power-of-attorney to let a friend or family member to apply for you.
- If no friend or family member can apply in person, you’ll need a local lawyer to do so.
For the court-issued certificate
- Apply in person at the municipal court (Opstinski Sud) where you last lived
- If you can’t apply in person, you’ll need a notarized power-of-attorney to let a friend or family member to apply for you.
- If you don’t know anyone who can apply for you, you’ll need a local lawyer to do so.
Special considerations
An English or French translation of your police certificates is required.
