IRCC’s response to a request for information made by the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration on February 28, 2022

Question

Mr. Marc Dalton: In the report entitled “English and French: Towards a substantive equality of official languages in Canada,” it was established that immigration was a priority for the development of francophone minority communities.

Can you tell us how many francophone immigrants were admitted to Canada, and more specifically in British Columbia, over the past five years? Do you have these figures at hand, or could you have them sent to us?

Ms. Corinne Prince: No, I don't have the figures for the number of francophone immigrants admitted to British Columbia over the past five years at hand.

Mr. Marc Dalton: Each province has a 4.4% target to meet for francophone immigration, with a view to enhancing the vitality of the French language everywhere in Canada. That's very important. I'm looking…

Data are preliminary estimates and are subject to change.

Beginning in 2019, "French-speaking" is defined to include: (1) permanent residents having declared a knowledge of "French only" as their official language, or (2) permanent residents having declared a knowledge of "French and English" as their official languages while declaring French as the language in which they are most at ease.

Prior to 2019, "French-speaking" was defined to include: (1) permanent residents having French as their mother tongue, or (2) permanent residents with a mother tongue other than French or English and "French only" declared as the spoken official language.
