COW – Screening of First Applications vs Extension Requests – May 28, 2026
- All foreign nationals, immigrants and refugees are carefully assessed before coming into Canada. This screening ensures that these persons do not pose a threat to the health, safety or security of Canadians.
- When required, cases are referred for full security screening with Public Safety partners.
- Every new application is assessed, even if previously approved.
- New information or expired screening can trigger a fresh review at the time of re-application.
- Officers are trained to identify risk and receive updated intelligence information as worldly situations evolve.
- In Canada, enforcement is led by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
- Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada works closely with the CBSA and security partners.
- Together, we identify inadmissible or out-of-status individuals and take appropriate enforcement and or administrative actions permitted under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to ensure the continued health, safety and security of Canadians.
