CIMM – Asylum Key Facts And Figures as of September 30, 2022 – November 29, 2022

  • Since the easing of border restriction on November 21, 2021, there have been 70.9 K claims made across Canada, representing a 34% increase in claims compared to the same period pre-COVID (2018/2019).
  • There were 8,661 asylum claims made in September, 2022. An increased of 270% compared to the same period last year.
  • Since March 2020, 1,269 asylum seekers were directed back to the U.S. [Unofficial Numbers as of September 30, 2022].
  • The Eligibility Inventory consists of 6.3 K claims pending eligibility at IRCC and 25 K pending at CBSA for a total of 31.1 K as of October 4, 2022.
  • Currently there are about 1.7 K initial work permits pending (As of 4 October 2022).
  • For irregular claims made in Quebec
    • As of September 2022 for irregular claims made in Quebec: 80% of eligibility decisions made in the last 8-weeks were done within 194 days or less.
    • Between January and September 2022, there have been 6,705 work permits issued to asylum claimants
    • During the 8 week period ending on September 2022, 80% of the work permit applications took 20 days or less to be processed
  • Ukrainian nationals made less than 10 claims in September 2022, for a total of 306 since the February 24, 2022 military invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
