• A digital nomad is a person who earns their living working online from various locations outside their country of permanent residence.
• As they are not entering the Canadian labour market, they may enter as visitors and reside where they like for up to six months.

• Digital nomads can work in Canada while on tourist status, either for themselves, or employers outside Canada.
• The Department is promoting the entry of digital nomads on our website now, and considering whether to expand this promotion.

Supplementary information

• As one of the pillars of the Tech Talent Strategy, announced in June 2023, the goal of this initiative is to encourage interaction between high-skilled digital nomads and Canadian employers who might wish to offer employment.
• For many years, Canada has welcomed thousands of digital nomads, who can enjoy cultural and recreational activities while they work for themselves or employers outside the country.
• As with all temporary residents, a digital nomad in Canada may apply for a work permit if they find a Canadian employer.
