  • From February 2021 to January 2022, there was a 55% reduction in asylum claim volume in comparison to the period from February 2019 to January 2020.
  • Although there was an initial surge in claims after the Order in Council (OIC) prohibiting entry into Canada from the US was lifted on November 21, 2021, there was an 18% decrease in asylum claims made from December 2021 to January 2022, and an 8% decrease from January 2022 to February 20, 2022.
  • As of February 20 2022, inland claims accounted for 35% of all claims. As inland claims are typically delayed, it is expected to surge in the next months. Airport claims accounted for 13%, Between the Ports (BtP) accounted for 45% of claims and regular land border accounted for 7% of total claims.
  • Mexico has been the top source country for asylum claims for the past 12 month period ending February 20, 2022; however, Haiti has been the top source country since the OIC.
  • As of January 31, 2021, the current eligibility inventory for IRCC is 5.7K, with another 1.1K pending Minister’s Delegate Review (MDR).
