Update to the instructions related to the oath of citizenship as a result of recent decision by Federal Court

Summary

As a result of a recent decision by the Federal Court, the following amendments were made to oath of citizenship information:

  • removed the requirement that a “candidate must be seen taking the oath of citizenship”;
  • added guidance that a candidate must sign the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship (CIT 0049) form after they take the oath of citizenship at all citizenship ceremonies.

Important: Operational Bulletin 359, “Requirements for candidates to be seen taking the Oath of Citizenship at a ceremony and procedures for candidates with full or partial face coverings” is expired and no longer valid.
