Changes to study permit conditions
Summary
Regulatory changes pertaining to the International Student Program came into force on June 1, 2014. Since then, certain international students may work off campus without a work permit as per R186(v) and (w).
To be eligible for a Social Insurance Number, Service Canada requires international students to present a valid study permit that refers to on- or off- campus work authorization.
As of February 2, 2015, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will cease accepting "Confirmation to work off campus" document requests. Students may apply for an amendment to their study permit if they wish to have the work authorization printed on their study permit.
As of February 2, 2015, officers must copy and paste the following new condition into the Remarks section for applicants who are eligible to work on- or off-campus:
- May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186(f), (v) or (w). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.
Officers must copy and paste the following condition into the Remarks section if the applicant is not eligible to work off-campus without a work permit:
- This permit does not authorize the holder to engage in off campus employment in Canada.
OMC is submitting a GCMS change request to make these conditions permanent.
