Extending the validity of visas
This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.
The validity of a permanent resident visa (PRV) may not be extended, and replacement visas cannot be issued with a new validity date. If a foreign national does not use their visa, they must make a new application for a PRV.
They must also pay a new application processing fee. If they have paid a right of permanent residence fee (RPRF), they do not need to pay it again. The RPRF can only be collected once.
Sometimes, due to factors beyond their control, applicants receive visas that are valid for less than 2 months. If they cannot travel to Canada before their visa expires, officers should update whichever requirement (for example, a medical exam) was used to set the visa validity date. When a new validity date has been obtained, a new visa will be issued.
