Language requirements (Interim Pathway for Caregivers)
This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.
The applicant must demonstrate that they reach the threshold set by the Minister for proficiency in either English or French, for each of the four language skill areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The current language proficiency threshold set by the Minister is available on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website (Interim Pathway for Caregivers).
Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the required level of language proficiency in all four language skill areas by submitting with their application the results of an English or French language test from a designated testing organization.
Language test results must be less than two years old at the time of receipt, and will be used as conclusive evidence of an applicant's language proficiency. Other written evidence will not be considered.
If the applicant can’t get language test results before the Interim Pathway for Caregivers closes, they must provide proof that they made an appointment to take a language test with an approved agency.
Depending on volumes at the test agency, the test date may be after the Interim Pathway for Caregivers has closed. This is allowed as long as the applicant provides proof that they made an appointment for a test before the Interim Pathway for Caregivers closed.
The applicant must provide the original test results as soon as they receive them. The date on the test results must match the date provided at the time of application. The results must be submitted in order for their application to be finalized.
