Definition according to the World Bank: The total labour force includes people aged 15 and older who meet the International Labour Organization’s definition of the economically active population, that is, all individuals who provide labour for the production of goods and services during a given period. This definition includes both workers and job seekers. While national practices vary in the treatment of groups such as armed forces personnel and seasonal or part-time workers, in general, the labour force includes armed forces personnel, job seekers and first-time job seekers, but excludes homemakers and other caregivers and workers in the informal sector who are not paid.

France, due to the diversity of its labour market, has a presence in all sectors of activity.

However, despite maintaining agriculture and industry at a high level, the French economy is today mainly a service economy.

Primary sector: all economic activities producing raw materials (agriculture, forestry, fisheries and, to some extent, mining)

Secondary sector comprises all economic activities corresponding to the transformation of raw materials into productive or consumer goods. (This is the industrial sector.)

Tertiary sector: sector of economic activities including trade, transport, services, etc.
