Scouts in the shade

Narrator - One of the first warm and sunny days of the season, and everyone comes out of hibernation.

Sarah Albietz - Scouts Germany - " "We woke up in the morning, we were like 'oh my god it's hot again', and it was the hottest day of the week." And on that day we were kind of a little bit silly and we decided to hike it all the way down to the Parliament."

Scouts in shade, getting sunscreen

Narrator - Hours in the blazing sun and these visitors from Germany are enjoying every minute of it. No need to remind these scouts of their motto - they've come prepared.

Girls drinking water in the shade

Sarah Albietz - Scouts Germany - " Uh, hats, sunscreen, water, water, water, lots of breaks, staying in the shade."

Narrator - Stand-up - So if you're planning on spending the entire day with the family outdoors remember that sunscreen alone isn't the answer to protecting you and your child from the sun's harmful rays. You'll also need to wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Remember to wear a hat and a cover-up. And grab the sunscreen and take it with you because you're going to need it.

Applying sunscreen

Mark Barnes - Pharmacist - " No one ever puts on enough... And you want to slip on a hat so, there's often a uh, you know slip, slap slop, you put enough of it on."

Sunscreen bottle

Narrator - Sunscreen works best when it's used properly. Use sunscreen when you are outside and the UV index is 3 or more. Sunscreen should have an SPF or sun protection factor of 15 or higher. Apply 20 minutes before you go out in the sun. Sunscreen can wear off over time, so remember to re-apply every 2 hours and more if you've been swimming or sweating. Don't forget your lips, ears and nose. Sunscreen is not recommended for babies less than six months old so keep your baby in the shade and covered up for best protection from the sun.

Narrator - And remember sunscreen is the last in the list and the least efficient way to protect against over-exposure.

Graphic of sun safety motto

Narrator - And finally, remember the next time you're heading out on a warm sunny day, this sun safety motto: Cap it, shade it, drink it and sunscreen it!
